Most Word Press releases are code named after well-known jazz artists starting after Version 1.0. Wordpress Plugins.

Word Press .70 was set loose on 27 May 2003 and used the identical file structure as its predecessor, b2\cafelog. Only 0.71-gold is available for download in the official Word Press Release Archive page.

Word Press 1.2 was nicknamed Mingus (after Charles Mingus), and published on 22 May 2004. It's notable for including the support of Plugins. The same Plugin identification headers are still in use, unchanged in the latest Word Press versions.

Word Press 1.5 was set loose on 2005-02-17 and given the nickname Strayhorn. It added a number of new much wanted features. One such idea is being able to create static pages. This allows content pages to be created and managed outside the ordinary blog timeline and has been the initial step away from being easy weblog management software to becoming a full CMS. Another is the new theme system, which allows users to quickly enable and disable "skins" for their weblogs. Word Press added a new default template (code named Kubrick) designed by Michael Heilemann.

Word Press 2.0 was released in 31 December 2005 and code named The Duke. This version added rich-text editing, improved administration tools, uploading of images, faster posting, a better import system, and completely recoded the back end. Word Press 2.0 also offered various Wordpress Plugins improvements to plugin coders.

On 22 January 2007, another major upgrade, Word Press 2.1, code named Ella, was published. As well as fixing security issues, version 2.1 featured a redesigned front-end and enhanced editing tools (including fanastic spell check and automatic saving), improved content management options, and lots of code and database optimizations.

Word Press 2.2, given the nickname Getz, was set loose on 16 May 2007. Version 2.2 included widget support for templates, new RSS feed support, and speed optimizations. Word Press 2.2 was initially slated to have a renewed taxonomy system for categories, as well as tags, but a proposed revision led to the feature being dropped.

Word Press 2.3, code named Dexter, was published 24 September 2007. Version 2.3 includes native tagging support, new taxonomy system for categories, notifications of updates as well as many interface improvements. 2.3 also fully works with Atom 1.0 along with the publishing protocol. Word Press 2.3 also implemented some much needed security fixes.

Word Press 2.5, nicknamed Brecker, was released 29 March 2008. Developers skipped over the release of version 2.4 so version 2.5 contained two releases worth of improved code. Word Press 2.5 saw a complete overhaul of the admin interface and the Word Press website was also redesigned to match the new style.
